Rallying Our Pep!

How much more can we take?

We wore our blue armbands this past weekend to stand in solidarity with victims of sex abuse. We asked over and over for accountability, change, and redress from the Church that betrayed them, and yet, it seems daily, more and more abuse comes into the light.

We protested unfair criticism and egregious treatment of women religious over the years. We got a half-hearted retractions, and then raping of nuns and sex slavery came into the light.

We called and witnessed, it seems forever, for inclusion of women, of all genders, into full ministry and leadership in the Church, and then more doors slamming and more minds closing shut out the light.

What a litany. And these are just some of the offenses and slights we could mention. How much more can we take before we surrender?

Well, if you think about it, it’s not really about how much we can take, is it? It’s about how much we can and have and will give.

So take that, you who wish us reduced, silenced, gone. As long as we are motivated by what we can give – and what we are given by a faith we persist in loving and a justice we persist in serving – we’re not giving up or going anywhere.

We’ve just begun bringing forth our gifts, courage, and intransigence into the light!

  1. On way of giving is to show the incongruities in church practices and doctrines related to human sexuality. For instance, the exclusively male church hierarchy gives the impression that the Christ-Church mystery can be represented as a same-sex marriage.
