World Day of Prayer for Women’s Ordination

March 25, 2021

World Day of Prayer for Women’s Ordination

The Feast of the Annunciation, March 25th, was also the 27th anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Women’s Ordination.

This year, our prayer and our message to the hierarchy was inspired by the words of the angel who appears to Mary: “Women Priests? Nothing will be impossible for God” (cf Luke 1:37).

Nothing will be impossible for God

To mark the Feast of the Annunciation, we invited our community to communal prayer and collective action to show our support for ordination justice. Here’s what we did (and how you can still act)!

PRAY

Our Facebook livestream gathered supporters together for prayer and reflection. Our prayer card features beautiful artwork and a prayer written just for the day to “God of All Possibility.”

A cadre of Twitter activists sent timed “digital greetings” to a select group of bishops throughout the day.

We got our hashtag (#OrdainWomen) trending and saw engagement from around the world!

WRITE

We asked supporters to write to the USCCB Office of Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations to express their support for women’s ordination and the urgency of reforming the priesthood to be inclusive, justice-rooted, and accountable. You can still write a letter!

GATHER

We gathered with our sibling snail-mail lovers over Zoom for a letter writing party.

God of All Possibility,

Mary’s fiat was a “Yes” that enfleshed divinity
That shook the foundations of power
That bore You through her human body to a broken world.
You promised her that with You, nothing will be impossible.
And so, amen, we believe the same.

We pray that those who have deserted your creative Spirit
To worship at the idols of patriarchy and privilege
Will awaken to the wondrous possibility
That women may, yet again, bear the image of Christ, as Mary did.
That women may, yet again, say “This is my body, this is my blood,” as Mary did.
That women may, yet again, preach the raising of the lowly and the humbling of the powers that be, as Mary did.

We pray to birth a new Church
where all may live into the fullness of their priestly callings.
For Mary bore the priestly duty of bringing Christ into the world.
And your power and possibility ensure that women today may do the same.

Holy Disrupter of the Ordinary,
may it be done to us according to your will.

Amen.
