From coast to coast, we're giving the gift of women as the pope visits the USA on his 81st birthday!

April 14, 2008

Pope Benedict XVI will visit the USA from April 15-19. On the night of April 14, the day before he arrives in Washington, DC, we'll give the gift of women, just in time for his 81st birthday, on April 16. We will:

  • host an inclusive Eucharistic liturgy presided by Catholic women in DC
  • encourage you to organize an event to engage your local community and media

The World Day of Prayer for Women's Ordination is a concerted global action held annually on March 25, the feast of the Annunciation, to draw attention to women's ordination and an inclusive priestly ministry in the Catholic Church. Every year, WOC members in the USA and women's ordination activists around the world host events to honor this special day.

Because the Pope’s arrival and the annual World Day of Prayer for Women’s Ordination, are so close together, we’ll celebrate this years’ Day of Prayer on April 14, in conjunction with the Pope’s visit, and call it the Day of Prayer for the Americas. We’ve put together an inclusive prayer service, and we'll work with our partners in Latin America and Canada to celebrate on this date with us.

We want to have a long list of cities holding prayer services on or near the April 14th date. It can be as simple or as elaborate as you like. From cathedral steps demonstrations to living room prayer circles, let our prayer be a witness of, and a call for, the change we know that our beloved church needs.

We encourage you to attend the DC event or to organize an event in your community.

Let us know so we can publicize your event and count you among the communities hosting prayer across the country!!! Email us today and include the date, time, and location of your event.

Bearing Witness
Organizing for Women's Ordination

What is bearing witness? Bearing witness is calling attention to the discrimination, inequities and inconsistencies in the Church. You can bear witness on the Cathedral steps, on a university campus, anywhere the bishop or media will be or even in your living room. This brochure contains helpful information about how to organize witnessing events around issue of women's ordination. All are encouraged to bear witness however they feel most comfortable. more...
