Challenge the Church: For a Just World Youth Day
Toronto, Canada.
July 22-28, 2002
World Youth Days is a time for Catholic youth from
around the world to gather and honor their faith tradition. Traditionally
the World Youth Days, marked by a visit from Pope John Paul II, have been
fairly conservative. However, this year, international church reformers
are coming together to create a unified, alternative voice. Challenge
the Church: For a Just World Youth Day is a
group of individuals and organizations, Catholic and non-Catholic, who
are challenging the Vatican on a broad range of issues, including women's
equality, sexuality, AIDS prevention, the Church's inadequate response
to sexual abuse by priests and religious, and freedom of conscience.
Challenge the Church will
raise awareness and provide a forum for discussing issues excluded from
the World Youth Day agenda. Topics such as racism, women's ordination,
and sexuality will be addressed through workshops, dialogues, prayer,
and theater. The multicultural, diverse City of Toronto provides the ideal
context for youth to engage in dialogue about these issues -- issues relevant
to the lives of people around the globe.
Join a delegation from the Young Feminist Network
to facilitate and participate in these alternative programs sponsored
by Challenge the Church. We
will celebrate women's gifts of ministry and speak about the necessity
of reform in our Church.
